How to Get Your Dog Used to Your New Home

How to Get Your Dog Used to Your New Home

If you’re like many pet parents in Boca Raton, you know that moving is stressful for dogs. So how can you get your dog used to your new home? This guide explains.

How to Get Your Dog Used to Your New Home

Check out these five tips that can help you get your dog used to your new home:

  1. Keep your routine
  2. Give your pup plenty of exercise
  3. Set up your dog’s space right away
  4. Pay extra attention to your four-legged family member
  5. Let your dog explore on their own time

Here’s a closer look at each.

Tip #1 for Getting Your Dog Used to a New Home: Keep Your Routine

As a pet parent, you know that dogs thrive on routine, and that’s no different when you’re moving. In fact, it’s even more important to keep your dog on a good routine when you move to a new home. That way, your dog realizes that some things are permanent, even if they’re living quarters aren’t.

It can be incredibly tough to stick to a routine when you’re moving – there’s no question about that. but try to stay as close to normal feeding times, walks, playtime and cuddle time as you can. When your dog knows what to expect, both in your old house and your new house, you’ll both be better off. Routines can help dogs lower their own stress levels, and as a pet parent, you already know that hanging out with your dog it’s good for your stress levels, as well.

Tip #2 for Getting Your Dog Used to a New Home: Give Your Pup Plenty of Exercise

Like humans, dogs shake off stress by getting physical exercise. You can make your dog more open to the new experience of moving by giving them plenty of extra exercise when possible. Naturally, you may need to consult with your veterinarian first, but if your vet says it’s okay, extra-long walks and a little more time throwing the ball or playing fetch can help make your transition to your new home smoother.

Tip #3 for Getting Your Dog Used to a New Home: Set Up Your Dog’s Space Right Away

When you arrive in your new home, set-up your dog’s space immediately. That way, your dog will have comfortable items that they’re used to, such as a pet bat or favorite toy, for comfort. You should also set up food and water bowls where you intend to keep them so your dog can start getting used to the new arrangement.

Tip #4 for Getting Your Dog Used to a New Home: Pay Extra Attention to Your Four-Legged Family Member

All dogs thrive with a little extra attention, especially during stressful times like moving. When you give your dog extra love, they recognize that everything is okay in their world. That makes adjusting to a new space easier on them… and probably easier on you, too.

Tip #5 for Getting Your Dog Used to a New Home: Let Your Dog Explore on Their Own Time

Exploring a new home can be overwhelming for a dog, which means it’s usually best to let your pooch explore on their own time. Close off rooms that aren’t necessary for your dog to be in, at least at first, so your dog can get used to the space slowly. When you’re ready, and when your dog is comfortable in the rooms you’ve let them explore, it’s time to open up the rest of the home.
