Highland Beach, a small community of just 4500 residents in Palm Beach County Florida, is known for its elevated townsite right along S. Ocean Blvd. minutes from Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and Boca Raton.
Originally incorporated in 1949, Highland Beach offers a laid-back atmosphere with an emphasis on luxury accommodations, endangered species conservation, and a vibrant tourist season. Although we only have about 4500 year-round residents, that number increases to about 8500 during the winter months. Most of the residents of Highland Beach retirees with about 20% engaged in business enterprises in Palm Beach and surrounding counties.
One of our most notable discoveries is our dedication to the endangered sea turtles. For eight months out of the year from March 1 through October 31, turtles come to the shores of Highland Beach and with thousands of eggs in their nests. Several weeks later, the hatchlings burst forth from the sand and make their way to the moonlit sea. The sight is unbelievable and we have such a dedication to these endangered species that our conservation is compared to none. Over 3 miles along Highland Beach become nesting ground for these critically endangered sea turtles. Nearly all the nesting activity takes place at night so one of the biggest hazards is beachfront lighting. This can deter females from nesting and hatchlings are attracted to the source of the brightest light, usually the reflection of natural light on the water. But, the brightness of the spotlight, flashlight, or car headlights can confuse hatchlings and misdirect them for a truck to the ocean. As it is now, less than one in 1000 sea turtle survive to adulthood, this is why Highland Beach has made its priority to preserve the sea turtle program.
Highland Beach also has a thriving Senior community. With senior centers, shopping excursions and community services, it’s a perfect place for retirees to enjoy the beach and relaxation of Florida.
