If you’re selling a condo or single-family house in Boca Raton, your REALTOR® will walk through it with you and point out areas that could use a little TLC to make the space more sell-able. But before you invite a real estate agent in for a look at your house, you may want to consider revamping these three features that make homes look old.
3 Features That Make Your Home Look Old
Though there’s no rule that says you can only sell an updated home, sometimes making minor improvements can help you sell a home faster (and for more money). Check out these three features that almost always date a home and make it look old:
- Carpet
- Brick fireplaces
- Wood cabinets
Here’s a closer look at each – and what you might want to do instead.
Feature #1 That Makes a Home Look Old: Carpet
Carpet is long-gone when it comes to what’s hot in homes. Buyers don’t want to live on carpet, and many will even ask for a flooring allowance in a home that does have it; the allowance will enable them to pay a contractor to rip it up and replace it with something more contemporary.
Though you don’t have to rip up the carpet in every room in your home – at least not without talking to your REALTOR first – you may want to consider doing so in the busiest, most-trafficked areas. The living room is a prime example; so are the hallways. Ideally, you won’t replace carpet with more carpet – you’ll replace it with hardwood, laminate or tile.

Feature #2 That Makes a Home Look Old: A Brick Fireplace
Bricks aren’t “out,” but red and brown brick fireplaces are. If you have a brick fireplace, you don’t have to replace it with marble or granite, though; you can whitewash it or paint it (with a professional’s help, of course) to update its look while keeping the texture and the cozy feel it provides.
Feature #3 That Makes a Home Look Old: Wood Cabinets
Natural-toned wood cabinets aren’t as popular as they once were – and that’s true no matter what shade, grain or style they are. Painted wood is another story, so you may consider painting all your cabinets and drawers white (or another buyer-friendly shade that matches the style of your kitchen). You might also consider removing them and opting for something sleek and stylish. However, this is a major job, and it can get pretty pricey; for that reason, it’s a good idea to talk to your Boca Raton REALTOR before you make any investments in your kitchen.

Modernizing Your Space Without Remodeling
If remodeling or making major upgrades isn’t in the cards for you, no sweat – you can make other improvements that will help modernize your space. Think about updating the wall colors, decor and accents, which can make a huge impact on the way buyers see your home. Your REALTOR can give you specific suggestions that will help!
