5 Weird and Wild Attractions Near Boca Raton
When you’re in the mood for an off-the-beaten-path adventure, check out:
- The East Coast Troll
- “Thrive”
- The Bulk Candy Store Museum
- Johnnie Brown’s grave
- The President John F. Kennedy bunker
Here’s a closer look at each.
The East Coast Troll
Located at 2898 East Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, the East Coast Troll is tiny but mighty. This small clay sculpture is hiding beneath the Atlantic Boulevard drawbridge, where you’ll find it gripping a Matchbox Honda CRV and paying homage to Seattle’s 18-foot-tall Fremont Troll. The troll itself is surrounded by original murals painted by a local artist, Dennis Friel, and was once part of the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt, or GISH.

“Thrive”
“Thrive,” a beautiful sculpture of a woman opening her chest to reveal a lush fern inside, is located at 301 Southwest 1st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Crafted from glass and fiber and created by artist Daniel Popper, this 30-foot statue is a must-see in front of the Society Las Olas apartment building.
The Bulk Candy Store Museum
The Bulk Candy Store Museum, located at 235 North Jog Road in West Palm Beach, is home to some fantastic memorabilia from the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie – including a Golden Ticket and an Everlasting Gobstopper. That’s not all, though; the museum is filled to the brim with vintage wrappers and one of the largest known collections of Pez dispensers. Though the museum is cozy, spanning just six rooms, it gives you a c0mplete history of sweets in human culture (starting with the ancient Egyptians cultivating honey) and plenty of samples along the way.

Johnnie Brown’s Grave
File Johnnie Brown’s grave under “Oddities You Never Thought You’d Find” and check it out at 14 Via Mizner in Palm Beach. It’s hidden between the ferns of the Pizza al Fresco courtyard and contains the remains of “the human monkey,” one of Addison Mizner’s exotic pets. The monkey went with Mizner to a wide range of high-society events. Though the monkey was invited to the now-famous Scopes Trial, where a teacher was charged with teaching evolution in school, he never attended – though he did run for mayor at one time. Today, local business owners leave sliced bananas out on dishes for his spirit.
The President John F. Kennedy Bunker
Hidden just below the surface of Peanut Island off Palm Beach, President John F. Kennedy’s emergency nuclear bunker is a safehouse that was built in just ten days by the Navy SeaBees. Only a few minutes’ drive from JFK’s Palm Beach resort home, this Cuban Missile Crisis-era bunker has now been restored to its original state and is open for tours.
